How To Succeed at 5 Aside Football

In this blog I will first discuss the tips and tricks to winning every game you play, even with that player on your team, we all know who comes to mind. It just happens that player on my team somewhat resembles an ogre, so I must choose my words carefully.

Possession

The first tip to success is quite obvious, however quite overlooked. Making use of possession of the ball. Research shows that the teams which control possession win more games. Overall, teams with more ball possession won 49.2%, drew 22.0%, and lost 28.7% of the matches”. Although there are always anomalies when it comes to research, keeping custody of the ball will only do good for your team.

DISCLAIMER: this tip only works when team members do NOT possess a “cement block” like touch.

Getting Back

Although, again, quite obvious, getting back is imperative for success on the pitch. Research shows that in 5 aside, most goals are scored on the counterattack. This is due to overloads of the attacking team, having 2,3,4 v 1s. Having these overloads makes it easy to draw “defenders” out of position and having an easy finish ahead. In 5 aside the focus is mainly on just attacking and scoring, however, defense should also have the same weight attacking has. You know what they say,Attack is your first form of defense” and “Ogre like player, you sure you don't want a substitution?

Maintain High Defensive Discipline

In 5-a-side, space is limited, so keeping a solid defensive shape is crucial. Avoid overcommitting players forward, and always have one or two players tracking back to cover defensively. Although easier said than done as everyone wants to get that “goal” that they will mention 8 separate times over the post-game pints. However, it is so important to communicate and keep one player back.

Quick Passing and Movement

5-a-side football is all about speed and agility. Perfect for Ogres! Please do not hurt me if you read this far! Thats assuming you can read! In 5s the focus is on short, quick passes and constant movement off the ball to create space. Pass-and-move plays will help break down tight defenses and create scoring opportunities. 1,2s are the most effective tactic when it comes to 5s, due to the change of speed and tight spaces, makes 1,2s so effective.

Formation

The most important tactic. How you line up. This leads me very nicely into the analysis section:

Video Analysis:

This week we went for the 2-0-2 formation, which worked very well seeing as it was a 13-0 masterclass. The 2-0-2 formation allowed for deep playmaking, allowing for one of the deep players to play the ball and follow up, providing an attacking outlet, whilst the other deep player covered.

Defensively it provided strong structure, and attacking, when used correctly, provided multiple out balls and creativity.

The 2-0-2 formation is best used against teams who are slower, more physical and lack real technical ability (and in this case manners)
